Rome, mapped and twinned

The resources, and the eight marseille threads matched to rome

Cork, Sunday 6 September 2026 (IST). Written for AT6012 2026-27 ahead of the Rome field fortnight, Monday 5 to Friday 16 October 2026 (ENGAGE event 22), with the Rome atlas due in week 5, Wednesday 21 October.

What this is. Every digital twinning and mapping resource of and for Rome that could be found and checked in one sitting, Terra Forma and the Critical Zone included, followed by the eight 2025-26 project headings from Marseille matched to a Rome site, Rome data and Rome literature. Twenty-seven sources were read off their primary records on 6 September 2026 and landed on the platform by migration 334 (tag at6012_rome); each is cited below by its bibliography key and resolves at engage.curricula.dev/Bibliography?key=<key>. Datasets, catalogue records and press notices are listed with their addresses and are marked grey; they enter the bibliography only when read at source.

The rule the brief runs on. Where a resource was found and read, it says so. Where it was found and only catalogued, it says so. Where nothing was found, it says so, and that absence is a result.

1. What the estate already holds for Rome

On the estate What it is Where
Rome unit 7, the living forest followed as a parcel Castelporziano through Moe's three frames over Osborne's 190-year horizon; fails on purpose at the missing Mediterranean parameter set src/data/rome-case-studies.js, rendered on /GaiagraphyFrame; brief docs/briefs/2026-09-03-rome-case-1-lagrangian-forest.md
Rome unit 8, the Critical Zone drawn inside out Three Rome events on Arènes' rings: the Tiber flood pulse (marra2018rome), the anthropogenic deposit (luberti2019anthropogenic), carbon into the holm oak soil (denicola2014humus, savi2016methane); the deposit has no ring same module; brief docs/briefs/2026-09-03-rome-case-2-critical-zone-gaiagraphy.md
Operator cases 1 to 3 Rome mapped forest first, drawn inside out, read with the NEB Compass, each in the nine-square with a worked recipe engage.curricula.dev/SDGExplorer?case=rome-forest-first, rome-gaiagraphy, rome-neb-compass
The Rome microclimate scorecard infrared.city SDK run on an 800 m site in Municipio VIII (Garbatella and Ostiense), with 757 street trees of 33 species pulled live from the Roma Capitale WFS layer DIPAMB:AlberatureSpecieMVIII; baseline against city trees on UTCI, wind and sun hours ccae.curricula.dev/at6012/infrared.city/scorecard_rome.html, overlay_worldcover_rome.png
The Rome weather file Ladybug submodule: Rome holds 877 comfortable hours a year against Cork's 30, UTCI, component by component ccae.curricula.dev/at6012/ladybug/
Seven verified Rome sources Landed by migration 319 on 4 September: marra2018rome, luberti2019anthropogenic, denicola2014humus, savi2016methane, marcon2019landis, arenesgregoire2024terraforma, brantley2007criticalzone bibliography
The Marseille atlas, to be rebuilt on Rome unic.abacusai.app, still titled for Marseille; three Critical Zones (atmosphere, surface, lithosphere) each read against Banham's four ecologies, with stocks, flows and emergy figures ccae.curricula.dev/at6012/_marseille-atlas.html and siblings

One warning about the atlas. The Marseille atlas carries figures with no source beside them: 420 ppm, 18 µg/m³, +3.2 °C, 85,000 social housing units, 1.5E+20 sej a year and more. They are placeholders written in 2025 and none names where it was read. The Rome rebuild carries none of them across. Every figure on the Rome atlas names its record, or it reads "not yet measured".

2. Digital twinning and mapping resources of and for Rome

Read and checked on 5 and 6 September 2026. "Requirement" is what a student needs in hand to use it.

2.1 The municipal geodata, keyless and live

Geoportale di Roma Capitale, WFS. The single point of access for the geographic data of the Capitoline administration, served over OGC WMS and WFS with no key. GetCapabilities was fetched on 5 September 2026 and returned 234 feature types. The ones the eight threads need:

Layer Holds Thread
DIPAMB:AlberatureSpecieMVIII Street trees with species, Municipio VIII; the layer the Rome scorecard already runs on 1, 5
DIPAMB:Idrografia, REGLAZ:CTRN_Idrografia_Linee, REGLAZ:CTRN_Idrografia_Poligoni The water network, municipal and regional technical map 6, 8
DIPAU:CartaPerLaQualita_* (eleven layers: Preesistenze as point, line and polygon; Morfologie; Edifici_Edilizia_Speciale; Deposito_Archeologico; Botteghe; Elementi_Spazi_Aperti including tree lines) The Carta per la Qualità of the Piano Regolatore: what the plan protects, building by building 1, 2, 3
DIPDIT:ZoneUrbanistiche, DIPDIT:ZoneCensimento, DIPPC:rc_zone_urbanistiche Urban zones and census zones, the units housing data is published on 4
DIPMOB:ztl_fascia_verde, DIPMOB:ztl_fascia_verde_varchi The Fascia Verde low-emission zone and its gates 5
DIPAMB:ZonizzazioneAcustica, DIPAMB:zonizzazione-* Noise zoning, by municipio 5
SOVR:SitoUnescoPoly, SOVR:area_vincolo_unesco, SOVR:buffer_zone The UNESCO site and its buffer 1, 3
DIPPC:300_Eventi_STORICI A civil protection layer of historic events; content to be read before it is cited 6
DIPAU:aree_verde_e_servizi_7792 Green areas and services 1

Requirement: QGIS with a WFS connection to https://geoportale.comune.roma.it/geoserver/ows?service=WFS&request=GetCapabilities, or Python with OWSLib or requests and a GeoJSON output format; check the layer's declared CRS before overlaying LiDAR. The scorecard's city_data.rome_street_trees() in infrared.city/infrared_client.py is the worked example of a keyless pull.

Regione Lazio geoportal (geoportale.regione.lazio.it). The Carta Tecnica Regionale Numerica at 1:5,000, version 2020, derived from the 2020 AGEA flight (geonode:ctr_5k_2020, GeoTIFF and vector); the 1:10,000 CTR of 1990/91; a 5 m DTM of 2002/03 in DXF; the quadro d'unione at 1:5,000. Requirement: a GeoNode account is not needed to download; the DXF terrain needs converting before it meets a raster.

Geoportale Nazionale, PST LiDAR (gn.mase.gov.it). The Ministry's Piano Straordinario di Telerilevamento holds LiDAR DTM, DSM first and DSM last at resolutions to 1 m over hydrogeological-risk areas, about half of Italy, under CC BY 4.0, through the viewer at sim.mase.gov.it/portalediaccesso or by request to datipst@mase.gov.it with a shapefile of the area of interest. Whether the Tiber valley through Rome is inside the covered half is to be confirmed on the viewer before anybody plans on it. Requirement: an area-of-interest shapefile, and the patience the request route implies.

Regional and national open data. dati.lazio.it publishes the ARPA Lazio air quality monitoring network as a dataset; ARPA Lazio's SIRA carries the station data to the previous day. Roma Capitale's own CKAN catalogue at dati.comune.roma.it returned HTML on 6 September where JSON was expected, so its API is unconfirmed; the geoportal above is the working route.

2.2 The city's digital twins, from the record

2.3 Terra Forma and the Critical Zone, for Rome

The method is Alexandra Arènes' with Latour and Gaillardet (Arenes2018), carried into the book with Aït-Touati and Grégoire (aittouati2022terraforma) and the Paris watershed reading (arenesgregoire2024terraforma). Workshops applying the drawing manual to other cities exist: the ALICE lab at EPFL and the Deep City workshop, and a Copenhagen workshop at the CAFx biennial on 15 October 2025. SOC's Gaia-graphy page names the OZCAR network of French Critical Zone observatories as the scientific partner.

No Terra Forma or Gaia-graphy work on Rome was found on 6 September 2026. The searches returned Paris, Arles, Lausanne and Copenhagen and nothing in Italy. Rome unit 8 on this estate is, as far as this search reaches, the first Gaia-graphic reading of Rome, and its open question, the ring for the anthropogenic deposit, is the question to put to Arènes. Italy has no OZCAR-style observatory named in what was read; the Castelporziano LTER site, with its tower and its classified soil column, is the nearest instrumented Critical Zone column to the city.

3. The eight threads, Marseille to Rome

The 2025-26 register held nine themes for eight active groups (the ninth, Surveillance and waterways, joined Waterscape). The Marseille column is the cohort's own words from the group pages of 2025-26; the Rome column is what was found and checked this weekend; the last column is where the thread lands in 2026-27 (ccae.curricula.dev/at6012/projects.html, the operator cases, the twelve plans).

Harbour pollution as a multi-scalar dashboard: Hub'Eau, SOMLIT-Frioul, Copernicus Marine, watershed boundaries The Tiber mouth, Ostia, Fiumicino and the Maccarese marsh: a permanent bathing ban at the mouth, subsidence, erosion between Focene and the mouth, the delta's 3,000-year record ARPA Lazio bathing classification; ARPA SIRA; InSAR; PST LiDAR of the delta if covered; the PAI bellotti2011tiberdelta, salomon2018ostia, giraudi2011maccarese, sarrau2025tiberdelta, polcari2018insarcoastline, delgadoblasco2019romesubsidence, annis2019vgitiber, calvo2009tiberforecast, napolitano2010tiberforecast Project 8; cases 5 and 7; weeks 8, 9

What did not transfer. Marseille's Hub'Eau, a national real-time water API, has no Italian counterpart found this weekend; the regional route is ARPA Lazio's SIRA and the basin authority's hydrometric network, and a student who finds the API is doing the project. Marseille's SOMLIT-Frioul time series since 1995 has no Rome equivalent read; the Castelporziano tower is the nearest long series, and it measures gas over a forest.

4. Gaps, and what closing each takes

  1. Terra Forma in Rome. None found. Unit 8 is the first; write to Arènes with the deposit question and the AIARG date.
  2. The digital twins' public access. Roads (CSIMU), the Atlante and the tree twin are all described in press and official notices with no stated public endpoint. Ask Roma Capitale's geoportal team whether any layer of the three is served over the WFS; the tree layer for Municipio VIII suggests the answer may be yes for some.
  3. PST LiDAR coverage of Rome. Confirm on the MASE viewer, then request the Tiber valley through the city by shapefile.
  4. Monte Testaccio at source. Read one volume of the Estudios before a row; the Journal of Roman Archaeology review of volume 1 is the way in.
  5. ISPRA sheet 374. Open the illustrative notes PDF and cite it as a map with its coordinators, once read.
  6. The Marseille atlas figures. Unsourced, and they do not travel to Rome.
  7. Rome's data-centre demand. No source. The thread's Rome project is to find or measure one, and to say so if neither is possible.
  8. Roma Capitale's CKAN API returned HTML; the geoportal is the working route.

5. Verification account

Twenty-six journal articles resolved at Crossref on 6 September 2026 with title, issue year, venue, volume, issue, pages and the full author list read back into migration 334; one book, Aldrete (2007), read off OpenLibrary work OL27069254W. Three earlier rows (marra2018rome, luberti2019anthropogenic, denicola2014humus) re-resolved the same day. The Roma Capitale WFS GetCapabilities was fetched and its 234 feature types listed. The NEB Compass, the DEIMS record and the Regione Lazio and MASE geoportals were read on their own pages. Everything marked grey above is press, a vendor page, a project page or a catalogue entry, and was not read in full; it is admitted as context and excluded from evidence. Nothing was inferred from memory.
